We woke up this morning for the second time to the tune of some guy learning to play the drums in the apartment block behind us, really annoying. And this morning I was Aching so much!!! We didnt have time to do much this morning, our lesson was at 11am so we got ready and headed out. Again we made time for SEJUICED, we couldnt resist, Ashley had Ruhbarb and Yoghurt this morning and i had fruit salad and we both had Banana bread, which is really popular alternative to bread over here. So after this we headed for our lesson, got wetsuits on again and headed out. Today there was about ten of us, they asked us who were very beginners and who had had a few lessons, so they split us up. To make numbers meet, they put me and Ashley in the not beginners group, cringe! i soon learnt that everyone could stand up in this class, and to me at least they looked pretty good, so i was scared again, because i couldnt even do the technique of standing up on the beach let alone in the water, and ashley was good at it on the beach!! hmmm... so on our way out and when i started to get battered i was ready to quit but our instructor, today a girl told me not to give up and to at least try it... so i did! Wow, im so happy i did, we didnt get as many waves today, was quieter, but we went further out, and i got ONE LEG UP!! HAHA! i tried to stand up, but after paddling over the waves my arms couldnt even hold me up, so i had no chance, but ya know one leg is good enough for me. As for Ashley he stood up once, but when we had come back in the shallow. We came out of the water happier than yesterday, and i think im hooked!!! the thing about surfing is, that even if your really rubbish, its still fun, i got battered through falling off today but we still came up smiling, its so good when the wave brings you in!!! We did however both come in Knackered, our arms Ache, our legs ache, so tomorro should be... fun! The plan after the lesson was to go home for lunch, but walking past the surfish cafe we couldnt resist so went here again, was sooo good! It was really hot today so we headed to the pool for a swim, rounded off an ace day.
I'm so glad now that we tried surfing, whether i stand up or not tomorro i still enjoyed surfing and think Everyone should try it!! I only wish they did it in England more because i think we would have had a few more lessons!!

Surfing, Surfish Seafood and SandCastles tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-24:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=24&entryid=28763 2006-10-24T11:48:20Z 2006-10-24T11:48:20Z Well... today was our FIRST surf lesson, and i was pretty scared, not scared of dying, just scared because Bondi gets pretty crowded and people watch surfers and i knew that i'd be rubbish. So we set off for Bondi, our lesson was at 11:30am, so we headed for some breakfast at SEJUICED first, SEJUICED is just the best, smoothies and anything healthy!!! Ashley had a Breakfast roll and i had muesli with Yoghurt and they both were ace! we then headed further along the beach to the surf lesson place, we had to fill in a few reg forms which like said if we died it wasnt there fault and they passed us some wetsuits. Having not really had a wetsuit on before, well i wasnt expecting much but seriously... you cant breathe in them, and they told me your not meant to, so they wernt that comfy. Well we toddled off to the platform where we met with other people in our lesson and we were happy to learn that there were beginners there too, and an English person yey! So we headed onto the beach, did some stretches, got our boards and headed onto the sand. Here they taught us the safety procedures, and how to paddle, and how to stand up then we headed out to try it, i was feeling more relaxed at this point. Well... what can i say, we tried it, we loved it, first we started by just lying on the board and catching a wave.... SOOOOO much fun!!! and that bits easy!! We came back onto the sand just loving it! then the guide taught us again how to stand up and we went back out to try it. This wasnt so easy, it isnt half as easy to stand up as it looks, in fact its very hard, Ashley managed it twice for around a second, but i couldnt do it, instead i somehow landed on my knees, but that was also fun! The waves are huge at Bondi, well... compared to Blackpool and i got battered quite a lot, when your trying to get out to sea to get the waves well they come in and land on you and there was a few occasions where my head went into tha sand, me and the board were picked up and thrown onto the sand, i got huge gulps of water, i landed on someone else and when the board landed on top of me. All of these hurt!! So when i got out, i wasnt that impressed! But Nevermind. So we got changed after our lesson and we were pretty hungry, surfing is surprisingly VERY tiring, so we went to the 'Surfish Seafood Cafe' and had some food, i tried Barramundi, its was sooo good, and Ashley had Chicken Burger... but anyway... after that we headed to the beach for a while and played, like two year olds in the sand for about an hour...

Us On the Beach!!!

We later headed home and into the Freezing swimming pool before going to the apartment for a warm shower... was fun today, and i hope tomorrow that i can stand up for at least a second on the surf board, but i dont think its possible!!!

Big Breakfasts and Bondi Market tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-24:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=23&entryid=28756 2006-10-24T11:41:19Z 2006-10-24T11:41:19Z Well we woke up early this morning due to our relatively later than usual night, and decided that we couldnt be bothered making food, so we wandered down to Bondi front to a small surfers bar on the beach front and had one 'big brekky' and one 'veggie brekky', was really good and they managed to make a greasy full english healthy, i even had spinach! yum! So after this we went to Mango surf shop and Ashley bought a t-shirt, which is nice. Then we wandered down the road and noticed some market shops, we had a look round and bought some bangles, then walked further and there was a HUGE market, it was ace, sold loads of nice things. It had like local designers selling there hand made clothing, and hand made jewellery and soap. They also had these cute like tiles which you could have your own pictures printed onto, very nice, but we're not here long enough to have it done. We also found this book shop where we got a rough guide to Thailand and a Lonely Planet guide to Singapore, these were $11 altogether, so a bargain!! After reading the books we also learnt that Pattaya, in Thailand the place we were supposed to be going (the accomodation link in the last blog) is absolutley awful, the main attraction is prostitutes and drugs, apparantly it says that the welcome sign to pattaya also advertises ecstasy, so yer, not going there anymore!!! We've decided now that we might take a plane down to Phuket which is a small island just off thailand, which is soooo nice!!! a lot different to Pattaya, but a bit more pricey, havent found any accomodation there yet though! Anyway, back to today, well we didnt buy much more, i was lured in by a nice purse which i bought for $20, the second one i've bought this trip, but not to worry, not that expensive. At this point it was pretty late and wanting to prepare for our surfing we went home and had tea, seems like a short day, but we did only get up at like twelve!! xx

Woody the One armed golfer, Gropers and Crocodile Harry tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-22:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=22&entryid=28489 2006-10-22T12:21:18Z 2006-10-22T12:14:55Z So, we were going out tonight, and we wanted to prepare, so we didnt do ANYTHING all day, i was still in my pyjamas at 5:30pm, so we were pretty lazy!! So, we were going out tonight, and we wanted to prepare, so we didnt do ANYTHING all day, i was still in my pyjamas at 5:30pm, so we were pretty lazy!! Well... after our lazy day we got ready and headed out... IT WAS FREEEEEZING! I stupidly trusted Ashley when he said 'Its Always hot in Australia' and didnt bring a coat, well a nice guy at the busstop did offer me his but i refused, felt a bit cheeky.

Anyhow, once on the bus it was better, we got off at circular quay and started walking up towards the centre, we went in every bar on the way, but that was only two we walked around for ages and couldnt find anywhere open!! hmmm!!! So we walked back down to circular Quay in the freezing cold rain, at this point we were very annoyed and i was ready to go home! But... then we found 'Jacksons on George Street', which was just the best club ever, it had food in one room, an outdoor seating area, a sports room in the back, downstairs was a Casino and Upstairs was a club, and it was free to get in, we needent move... ever!! So first we tried watching the Rugby, Australia vs New Zealand but we didnt get it, so we went for some food. We went downstairs to the casino next, but it was too complex so we went upstairs to the club!! We were sat down literally two minutes when this very drunken guy comes and sits next to us. He was soooo drunk, but he was a funny Australian, he was telling us that he came over to England and that he hated it, that the English were all Thievin Bastards, and that he was astonished that these guys stole a crate of beer, haha, he was so mad about it!! I think he kept forgetting about us being English because he asked where we came from about 5 times, nevermind... After he had finished talking to us... which was a LONG time, he introduced us to this old man who they referred to as 'Ned Kelly', he was old, and had a beard and reminded me of a tramp we had passed early on that night, but nevermind. So this guy started talking, and talking and talking and we listened... for two hours!! He told us lots of crazy things that we thought were just ramblings of an old drunken man, but nope... all facts, we learnt about:

[*]Crocodile Harry - he told us about this guy that lives in a cave in Cooga Peedy in a cave and was once a crocodile hunter but now he sits in his cave and people pay him $2 to talk to him and he has womans underwear on his ceiling, we so just didnt believe him, but if you google it, he actually does exist!! crazy!

[*]Woody the One-Armed Golfer - Haha, apparantly one of his friends was a one armed golfer who was ranked 11th in the world... of one arm-golfers, but he told us, before bursting into laughter that Woody was annoyed that he was 11th and he said he should have been 3rd and it was due to the fact that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer whilst the trials were on... he found this hilarious!

[*]Gropers and Stone Fish - He had loads of tales to tell us about crazy fish in the barrier reef, these included (apparantly) these HUGE fish with gigantic lips which are really grumpy, he said if you got on the wrong side of a groper, well... it wasnt good, he explained after i asked if they killed u, that gropers dont have teeth, and they're not very intelligent so they gobble you up then spit you back out, whether this is true or not we're yet to discover, but Gropers exist!! He also told us about stone fish, sea snakes, that we was allergic to sea wasps! and flys! god he talked a lot!

[*]He also taught us how to throw a boomerang, and told us of his collection of boomerangs in his house, haha! now we know the difference between a good thrower and a bad thrower! get us! we've yet to throw one, but we aim to do this in Cairns.

After that we were desperate to leave, seriously he was such a nice guy, a geniunely nice, intelligent guy but we were bored and meant to be clubbing and we hadnt moved in two hours, so when he stopped for breath we made our excuses and left, but this meant we had to leave the club, so after this we went home, it was still cold and still raining so we were desperate for our bed. We missed the last train by 30 seconds, we saw it drive off, and thats after we'd bought a ticket, so in the centre of sydney, at 1am not knowing where the hell we were slightly tipsy we had to go to a cash machine, this involved a few wrong pin numbers and get a taxi home! We were soooo cold by the time we got home, so we turned to old faithfulls our hoodys and silly dog socks and a dressing gown! Perfect!!!

We'd been looking forward to doing this for ages, as soon as we knew we were coming to Sydney we knew this was the one thing we wanted to do. Well today was the day of our BridgeClimb and we were pretty excited!!! We'd been looking forward to doing this for ages, as soon as we knew we were coming to Sydney we knew this was the one thing we wanted to do. We'd heard bad things and good things about the Bridgeclimb but we were still excited!

It cost $169 dollars to do the climb, and you got to choose whether you wanted to do a night or a day climb, we chose night, so we had to be there for 5:45pm. But just before we were setting off there was an electrical storm, we thought it would be cancelled, but we were assured it wouldnt be. So we set off.
We got to the Bridgeclimb place and checked in for our climb, its actually like your getting on a plane. We had to sit and watch this cheesy video before going into a room where they made us fill in a disclaimer form. Well after that they gave us our uniforms, there was lots of it, a sexy boiler suit, waterproof pants, a harness, a radio, a hanky, a fleece, a waterproof coat and i had to have braces coz my harness kept falling down! Well after that we had to be trained on how to climb the bridge, so had to go on a fake bridge and learn the rules of the bridgeclimb... was easy so we set off!!
Once you were on the bridge, it was just amazing, u had to walk underneath the bridge first like on the supports, then climb up the ladders through two lanes of traffic, which was a bit scary and up to the arch of the bridge! By this time it was around 7pm and it was dark, the lights over sydney were amazing, and the view was just stunning, worth the money when we'd just got on the bridge!!
bridge_climb_at_night.jpg
So we carried on up the arch, and the tour guide was telling us about the history of things on the way up, some interesting facts like the opera house weighs 3 times more than the harbour bridge! we carried on and as we got nearer the tops we started to see birds circling the bridge, the guide told us that moths flock to the bridge at night because of the lights, and the birds come up to get there tea, they were that close that you could see the bird catch the moth, ace! We got to the top and the view was just spectacular, Ashley wished he had his camera but your not allowed to take anything on the bridge, in case u drop it and kill someone i dont suppose.
So we got to the top and had our picture taken. We crossed over the bridge and started to descend on the other arch. This time we passed through two train tracks, but no train came.
I'm sorry if this is boring, but you can't get accross how good it was, the view was just the best, you got right on top near the australian flags, and the guide told us all the amazing facts about how many bolts there were (6 million) and how many people died and that they built it without harnesses or safety equipment! She also told us that Luna Park, which is just accross the Harbour was actually given to the residents of Sydney as a sorry for all the noise that the making of the bridge caused... bet they're not bothered now they have that view! And when we got chatting they also told us that all the steel to make the bridge actually came from Middlesborough!
BridgeClimb.jpg
Well we descended the bridge and got back to the training place, two hours after we set off. We took all our equipment off and went to get our pictures... well they were terrible, i dont know whether it was the wind, but we both looked stoned on every one, i had my eyes shut on them all, so we didnt buy any, we got our complimentary pictures, but that wasnt much better! We walked back along the harbour and looked up at the bridge, it was huge! Hard to imagine we'd just been to the top of it!!
We were hungry at this point so we set off walking to a 'Night Noodle Market' but after a 30 minute walk it was closed!! We walked around Sydney for a while, saw some clubs that looked ace, but dont think they would have let us in in our hoodies so we headed home, before going to pizza hut for some tea. Tonight was ace!! The Bridgeclimb is really worth doing, something we'll remember forever, so well worth it! And we've been inspired to go out in Sydney tomorrow night, so that should be good too! x

On Wednesday we decided beacuse it wasn't very sunny to stay in, we went in the freeeezing cold pool in the afternoon then came inside and got comfy and warm.... see the pictures below on the link:

Comfy Pictures

(getting comfy involved us wearing our cringeworthy matching hoodies, head turbans (mine because my hair was wet, Ashleys because he'd seen it on Ray Mears so he decided to have a go) and the ridiculous dog socks which my mum bought me from cornwall, Ashley loves them..i'm still unsure!!

On Thursday we decided that we had to go out and so decided to go to Watson's Bay, but when we got to Circular Quay we were lured into an Italian Restaurant in The Rocks by the smell, We had Bruschetta and Garlic Bread to Start and then Ashley had Tagliatelle with bacon and i had Spaghetti Marinara, and it was like the best food ever!!! Was soooooooooo Good!! After that and feeling ridiculously full we headed to the shops and bought presents for Stefan, Vicky, Brendan and Sally. After this we went back to the Harbour and had fat man ice creams, which were good even if we were a bit full. And that was basically it, we headed home, and we still havent been to Watson's Bay!!

Well i have to apologise for our uneventful days and our dull blogs, bt we have the Bridge Climb to look forward too!!

Uggs, Hoodies, and crazy Chickens! tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-17:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=18&entryid=27844 2006-10-17T12:26:16Z 2006-10-17T12:22:05Z Again... we didnt have a plan for today, we picked somewhere we could go for free on our travel pass, which today was 'Watsons Bay' and headed off! Again... we didnt have a plan for today, we picked somewhere we could go for free on our travel pass, which today was 'Watsons Bay' and headed off! We called at Bondi Junction to pick up my Birthday Present, i'd been wanting this hoody from a livesavers surf shop, it said Bondi Beach on it, so Ashley said he'd buy it me for my Birthday, yey! not a bad birthday afterall!! Taking the oppurtunity of being in Bondi Junction we went to PIE FACE!! We both had wraps then Ashley had a chicken pie, and when he bit into it and saw the contents he said it looked 'Vulgs' which im thinkin meant he wasnt to keen on Pie Face's Pies, but he ate it! I went for a sweet pie, a cherry pie to be exact and it was good, i give ashley half because i thought he looked a bit disappointed with his choice! We got a juice after this, and a yoghurt, these were good and we discussed the juice bar situation in England, which apparantly isnt thriving!
After our refreshing lunch and me wearing my hoody not caring if i looked like a tourist at this point we headed to Cental Quay;the harbour; and because we were saving money on our flights, i thought it was only right that i buy some UGG boots, which are cheaper over here, so really how could i refuse! THEY'RE SOOO COMFY!!!
Ashley wasn't feeling very well at this point so we went and sat on a bench watching the boats, some old people being attacked by birds and some random weird crazy person pretending to be a chicken for money, seriously he was crazy and for some reason ashley was really freaked out by him. So on our way past i asked him if ashley could have his picture taken and literally had to push Ashley next to him! haha! He smiles on the picture, but he assures me he was freaked out!! The picture doesnt really do the chicken man justice so we're gonna go film him!
After this experience We needed a sit down so went to the botanical Gardens and sat on another bench, no crazy birds attacked us today though!
When we got home we sorted out our flights, and they're as follows, well we think!! We are allowed to change them but hopefully now we wont!

31st October - fly to Cairns 07:05am

28th November - fly to Singapore from Cairns 13:55pm

4th December - fly to Bangkok from Singapore 22:30pm

27th December - fly to London from Bangkok 00:35am (bit of a poop time)

28th December - Fly to Manchester from London

Soooo.... we're home a LOT earlier than we thought, away for Xmas but home for new year and we come home on my Mums Birthday, so a nice/bad present... plus Ashley points out... "Our xmas shopping in Thailand will be well cheap, like a tenner for the lot" which is also good!!

So having our flights sorted we didnt have much left to do, just accomodation for singapore and thailand and changing the insurance. Well... later on we Booked some accomodation in Singapore for 6 nights, and it looks soooooo nice... click the link below to have a look:
The Hotel In Singapore

So we're pretty much sorted, we've emailed the insurance people for a quote and to see if we could upgrade or something, and we've emailed people about accomodation in Thailand. We also spoke to someone today about whether Thailand was safe, and we were told that it was fine! that lots of tourists visit each year and that it was perfectly safe! So mum, Stop Worrying!!

Some Pictures from today are on the link below:: (look for Ashley with the weird chicken man and me in my new hoody and Ugg Boots, I refused to take them off even when i got home - gonna sleep in them!)

My Birthday!!!... and new Travel Plans! tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-17:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=17&entryid=27842 2006-10-17T12:13:24Z 2006-10-17T12:13:24Z Today it was my 19th Birthday! YEY! So.. i woke up to a phone call from home, well... they woke me up at like 8:30am, not good, my brother, obviously forced onto the phone was very talkative as per usual 'hiya, happy birthday, bye' great! Today it was my 19th Birthday! YEY! So.. i woke up to a phone call from home, well... they woke me up at like 8:30am, not good, my brother, obviously forced onto the phone was very talkative as per usual 'hiya, happy birthday, bye' great! Anyhow... after that i got a 'happy birthday' song from ashley which was... nice, and a happy birthday hug! Then i put up my birthday cards which i kind of have to balance on the window sill inbetween the blinds, but i like to think it brightens things up, hehe! Well today, we didnt really have a plan, we decided that we'd go and sort out our return flights seen as we thought we'd decided what we were doing. So we headed to the terminal, and they tried to charge us £4 to get into the terminal, so being cheap we turned around and went home. Well... we went into the centre instead to the qantas office there. We spoke to this big fat gay guy who was horrible at first but turned nice. He told us that we didnt have many options and to miss out perth would be expensive because we couldnt fly direct to Hong Kong from Cairns... it was very confusing, and with my geographic knowledge being rubbish, it didnt help, ashley and the big fat gay guy were talking about thailand, i didnt even know where it was, nevermind that Bangkok was in Thailand, so i was very confused and after a while my head started to hurt. Well... this big fat gay guy told us that our best option was to fly from cairns to Singapore, stay there then fly to Bangkok (Thailand!) and this would be free on our ticket, yey! So we went away to think about it, he'd told us that Thailand was very cheap, and good for teenagers, these were both very appealing. He told us that Hong Kong was not as good for younger people like us and it had gone expensive in the last few years... so we chose the other option!! After this we were excited that we were gonna be goin to Singapore and Thailand so went home to look at hotels and apartments. The big fat gay guy was right, thailand was very cheap... one o.k. apartment was £129 for a month! crazy! so we can afford somethin swish!

After looking for apartments and hotels for about 5 hours we remembered it was my birthday! yey! and Ashleys Dad had said we could go for a meal with the credit card, yey!!! So we did, we went to an italian in Bondi Beach, i had gnocchi and Ashley had Calzone and we had choc mousse! was sooooo nice!! So Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou to Tony, because without that meal it would have been a pretty poop boring birthday! :o)
So on the way home from our meal we were pretty happy, and in a bit of a silly mood so we took some random pictures of us tryna be skallies, because australia doesnt have any!! so we thought we'd bring a bit of the manc culture to Bondi, it didnt work, we didnt make such convincing townies! nevermind!

Pictures are on a link below!!!

So its been a few days from the, basically what happened was we got another crap job and left that, it seems like every job for travellers here is annoying people which neither of us can do, so after a couple of crap days where we both got slightly fed up we've decided to have a big change of plans. Instead of stayig here 9 months and working rubbish jobs and spending half the time really bored we're going to stay three months pack in as much as we can and enjoy every day, this way we don't have to work while we're out here and we can put back all the money we spend by working when we get home.
This plan came about when we were sat in the Botanical gardens in Sydney overlooking the Opera House at sunset whilst being attacked by a savage japanese bashing bird (strange story). Anyway wespent the bulk of saturday night trying to arrange the new idea, everything going well so far BUT this morning we have to go and tell the apartment owners we're leaving here early which may cost a lot of money so we're both quite scared.
On the first day with our new outlook where we both feel much better we looked out of the window and it was raining for the first day....brilliant. We got ready anyway and decided to head into the Blue Mountains. We set of around 9 o clock thinking we could get there for about 10 and have a full day up in the mountains. We pulled into Katoomba Station around 1:30 with no idea where to go. So we bought a ticket for the most expensive bus in the world and headed for the only place we'd heard of the three sisters. We got to he look out point and like everything else in Sydney all the photos we've seen didn't do them justice. We could not believe the size of the valley and the number of trees. After Ashley took about 30 pictures (still trying to get a feature photo) we headed of on a trail through the forest surrounded by cockatoos and parrots we got very lost, we seemed to walk round in circles about 5 times. We eventually found a map and decided to head to the cafe (which apparently was a rotating cafe but we didn't notice) for some lunch, pleased because we saved a lot of money coming to the mountains on our own instead of on a tour Hannah decided to spend half her savings on chocolate for the way home.
(Hannah Takes over because even though its the first blog ashleys written, he's bored already...)
We managed to keep ourselves amused on the way home by taking silly pictures and inventing a game, we call it 'spin ashleys hat on your finger', a skillful game, and even though we made it up Ashley isisted i was doing it wrong! hmph! After that got boring, about ten minutes we turned our attention to laughing at people... this kept us amused for the rest of the journey. There was a booty walking japanese woman, this like 7ft tall woman with purple lace leggings on, and best of all this drunken girl on the train who fell asleep then wen the bell went at a station ran off the train and ran back on again... there are some weird people in sydney at night!
We reached home at around 7:30, just in time for animation domination, something ashley was particularily looking forward to. After checking emails and talking some more about the plan we then went to bed... and id pretty much forgotten it was my birthday tomorro! x

Oh, and i feel i have to explain the strange story ashley mentioned above. Well... what happened, we decided we'd go and sit on the grass hill in the gardens which overlooks the harbour, it looked pretty calm and sereen, it wasnt!! We sat down and it didnt take long before this crazy bird flew over and missed our heads by a millimetre (i may exaggerate, but it was close). we were scared, and then, it did it again, but was closer! We started laughing, i was more scared than ashley, because this bird had a sharp beak, and he was hiding behind me! So we watched it fly off then all of a sudden it flew down and hit a japanese girl in the face and then she fell over ( well we're not to sure if it hit her, but there was a crack then she fell over, so we're presuming) Well... we couldnt stop laughing, well until the bird came back and like flew close to us again, then we just ran! we went to get an ice-cream after this, to calm our nerves! hehe! x

We've ran out of pikkie uploading space, so here's a link to our pictures from today!

I woke up today and checked my emails as per usual and was shocked to find an email from my mum! yey! so glad she can finally use email, its actually a revalation because when i left her she couldn't even turn a computer on, so progress is happening! So for that i was very happy, so i replied with a very long email!

We decided that we were going to go to Manly, which is a famous beach, the closest to Sydney and where all the surfer dudes hang out... kool! we had to get a ferry to get there, it took thirty minutes, and when we got there it was very hot! we walked down the main street to the beach, which is HUGE, and really nice, so clean and packed, even at about 10:30 in the morning. Seriously, in Sydney, EVERYONE surfs, theres old people in there 60's surfing, seriously, and like little kids, we saw two little girls carrying mini pink surf boards who were about six, so good, even fat people surf! So feeling a bit jealous because we lacked this talent we went to sit on the beach and just watch. Ashley began to moan so we went shopping. And Manly is FULL of surf dude shops, Roxy, Quicksilver, Billabong, Surfection, of which we are now regulars!

After a wee bit of shopping we headed back on the ferry and decided to try and suss out city centre shopping, we headed into town on the train (because today we bought a red travel pass which gives us unlimited travel on bus, ferry and train, so we're getting our moneys worth) but still we could not get where the main shopping centre is! Sydney Centre is that big that you get lost and end up going in circles around the block, today we got lost in chinatown... again, we just cant seem to get it, hence why we like to stay at circular quay, so much calmer and nicer!
So after we'd failed to shop again, we headed home on the train and bus on our pass, Tomorrow we have our training day, and it doesnt finish till nine, we havent stayed awake past like 7:30 yet, so it will be hard, maybe impossible, will let you know!

Oh and today was the first day i've been sun-burnt, oops.. gonna make sure i put LOADS on tomorro

P.S Sorry... no pictures, Ashleys Batteries have run out, and although i love pictures, im not at snap happy as Ashley, so probably my fault! x

Good Jobs and Ice Cream tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-11:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=13&entryid=27105 2006-10-11T08:11:42Z 2006-10-11T08:11:42Z Today was Ashleys Interview at the Rocks at Circular Quay, it was my day off from the 'gourmet sandwich' shop and so i said that i'd go with him. Today was Ashleys Interview at the Rocks at Circular Quay, it was my day off from the 'gourmet sandwich' shop and so i said that i'd go with him. We were ready at ten so we decided to head into town. When we got into circular Quay we hadn't got far before we saw a huge crowd of people, being nosey we decided to watch too. It was a guy (called Joules) who was a street performer, we watched him swallow a sword, juggle fire whilst on a tightrope on one leg and walk through a pole. He was wild (ashleys description), and he was pretty funny too... shouting comments at passers by. par example, a group of workers went past in blue uniforms and he shouted too them 'Don't you just hate it when you find you've got up and dressed exactly the same as all your friends.' haha, maybe you had to be there!

After that we went for some lunch in Bakers Oven, with a dutch guy who was really shocked that i had milk in my tea and then nearly died when i asked for extra, and he saw how much i had in tea!

We then went to the rocks shops which were pretty touristy, but tacky tourist things are funny so we searched them in hope of presents funny enough to send home, we kind of suceeded. It was now around 2pm so Ashley left me alone to go to his interview, but he wasnt long and by about ten past he was back out again. He cameout smiling which i guessed was a good sign, he told me he'd got the job and that the guy was kool, (again) the money was good and the hours were flexible, sounded perfect, so when he told me that the guy said that i could have a job if i wanted i thought i should. This way we'd both be together and have shifts off together and not be left alone at night on our own, so sounded good. So i picked up the forms and we both had jobs, first thing was a training day on Thursday.

After that we were very happy, so we decided to celebrate by eating ice-cream. We went to a shop where there was a big fat jolly ice cream man, who was a very happy chappy. we got talking to him, and he told us that he knew Palm Cove, the place we were going to next, and he told us it was unbelievable, that it was a gorgeous part of the world, so that was good, and the ice-cream was good too! We sat and ate the ice cream watching boats come in and out of the harbour and listening to a crazy opera Guy.

After that we decided we were too happy to go home so got on a ferry to Darling Harbour, on which Ashley noticed an angle of the Harbour bridge that he had not yet captured, so he had to get that, but i dont think its going to win any prizes!
Day of Int..our 003.jpg
Thank God the battery Ran out or there would have been more...
Darling Harbour's pretty cute, its like a small version of sydney harbour, with loads of shops, not many good ones and loads of good bars and restaurants. We picked up a few brochures to pick my Birthday cruise from and then headed home.

At home we watched Simpsons, family guy and futurama, because now i think we're addicted, and then we fell asleep... perfect!

Gourmet EggPlant Sandwiches tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-09:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=12&entryid=26941 2006-10-09T21:38:02Z 2006-10-09T21:38:02Z Well today was my first day at the sandwich shop, and i was pretty scared coz the woman looked pretty nasty when i handed my Cv in. I was meant to start at eleven but a guy rang me and asked me to come in early so i was there for ten o'clock, Ashley walked with me and then left me to go on a mission to find a cheese grater.
So i soon realised that this sandwich shop was not much like Subway, infact it was a 'Gourmet' sandwich shop, so that made my current sandwich making experience pretty useless as i didnt even know what the ingredients were, i mean who wants eggplant, or artichoke or avocado on a sandich. It was really complicated and really fast, but it was ok. The people there were nice, i met a girl who was travelling too, she lived in Bondi with her boyfriend. She was French, and apparantly hated australians because she couldnt understand them, she'd mutter 'shitty australian shitty accent' every time someone ordered a sandwich which was quite amusing in a french accent. And when she didnt know a word she'd whistle then carry on. When i told ashley this, he thought that she may have French Tourettes, which makes sense i suppose! Well... i was meant to finish at 3:30 but the scary woman said 'No, u stay till 4" but ashley was waiting for me, so she insisted that i 'feed and water' him, so i made him a sandwich, a gourmet sandwich.

At 4 O'clock i got ready to leave, she put me on the rota for next week and insisted that i take some food home... i had a sandwich with eggplant on it, i felt obliged to try it! We walked home and Ashley told me that he had spoke to a guy (who he tells me was really kool) and he had an interview at the harbour tomorrow. So all was going good, i had a job, Ashley nearly had a job and we had free gourmet eggplant sandwiches, what could be better?! Oh... what is better is that Ashleys mission to find a cheese grater was successful, even if it did cost $5 and it is a hand held one! (we decided, that for that price, we were bringing the grater home and we'd flip a coin to see who got to keep it to take to university!) So all is good, and when we sort out our hours we're gonna book some Surf lessons, yey, cept i might wimp out and just do bodyboarding! xx

Today wasnt a very interesting day, and ashley clearly didnt see a winning picture at the shopping centre so no photos were taken! x

We Headed out early into Sydney Centre, we went on the bus this time and passed some really cute places, one was called Paddington, with a chip-shop named 'a fish named paddo' which we thought was kool. We reached the city and headed to wharf 2, we'd decided to go to the zoo today (something me and ashley had been excited about since we knew we were coming to Sydney) and had to get a ferry to get there. We were early for the ferry so we decided to head to the Opera House for a close up look. Ashleys discovered that on the travellerspoint website they 'feature' a photo from a persons travels each day, and now he's decided its his mission to get one of his pictures featured. So when i started to look around the little market and i turned around to find ashley was missing i thought i knew where he would be. Sure enough he was up the steps next to the opera house dangling over the railings with his camara trying to get a winning picture... i think he still has some way to go, but since he found out he hasnt put his camara away just incase there was a picture which would win.
P1010051.JPG
We got on the ferry and headed over to Toronga Zoo, which turned out to be the best zoo we'd ever been too! It had soo many animals, our favourites giraffes and Bears, and some we hadnt seen before, like a 'fishing cat', or a snow leopard. They also had some animals which were pretty boring, like chickens and ducks...we skipped them! We saw a seal show, which was good. We heard a talk on Penguins, who were soo cute, tiny ones!
S6000067.JPG
We went on a sky safari, we had italian food in the food market, we saw Koalas and Wombats and Kangaroos... But Our Favourite was by far the Meerkats, who were just so funny...
P1010060.JPG
After that we also paid to feed the Giraffes and have our picture taken, it was sooo good, Ashley got Giraffe Slaver all over his hand and the Giraffes started fighting over our carrots. This was good because my favourite animal is the giraffe, so yer, was ace!!
S6000082.JPG
By about 3 O'clock we'd seen all the animals and so decided to head home, the weather had now changed from around 32 degrees to gail force winds (17 degrees) so we were happy to head home.
When we got home ashley cooked (he cooks to avoid washing up, because we take it in turns, i've recently figured out!) we had fish, mash and veg, which reminded us of home, but it was pretty difficult on one hob, was very good though. Ashley watched a cartoon Marathon after tea and i headed to bed, i was nervous about starting work tomorro! But finally we were on Aussie Time! Yey! Sigh of Relief! x

Coastal walk and Coogee tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-07:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=10&entryid=26679 2006-10-15T22:33:12Z 2006-10-07T20:37:57Z So after yesterday, being a bit rubbish and all i felt a wee bit homesick but ashley managed to cheer me up being sympathetic as usual and telling me to 'stop winging'. We'd decided yesterday that we were going to do this walk that we had heard was worth doing. It was called the Eastern beaches coastal walk, and went from Bondi Beach to Coogee beach (apparantly pronounced 'COO - G'). So after yesterday, being a bit rubbish and all i felt a wee bit homesick but ashley managed to cheer me up being sympathetic as usual and telling me to 'stop winging'. We'd decided yesterday that we were going to do this walk that we had heard was worth doing. It was called the Eastern beaches coastal walk, and went from Bondi Beach to Coogee beach (apparantly pronounced 'COO - G'). We set off past the iceberg cafe(worth a look, very posh!)where they have an outdoor pool next to the rocks that gets all the splash from the waves and a panoramic view of Bondi Beach.
Walk from ..gee 021.jpg
We carried on up the coast to more stunning views of Bondi Beach and then headed round the corner to the next beach, which ashley calls tamaramarama, but is officially known as 'tamarama'. This beach was loads quieter than Bondi and the sea was full of bodyboarders which was ace to watch. We walked up the hill and stopped for a moment to laugh at the bin, im sure we got a few weird looks, but we found it amusing:
Walk from ..gee 023.jpg
Next was Bronte which was also nice, and had a swimming pool in the sea. It seems in Australia the sea is made for surfers not swimmers. We walked on again to Clovelly Beach which was a narrow bay which had been made into a seawater pool, where there were swimmers, rowers, kick-boxers on the beach and people doing yoga, and this was at 7:30 in the morning!
The next place we came to was Gordons Bay where again there was lots of people being very active. At Gordons Bay there was what was called an underwater nature trail, which ashley wanted to do but then realised that we had to have scuba diving equipment and a brief knowledge of how to use it. Apparently the trail was built underwater around plants and animals so you could follow it to see the different ones, ingenious i thought.
Walk from ..gee 025.jpg
After this was the last beach, Coogee, which was a lot calmer than Bondi, hardly any waves and so not many surfers. We walked down the path and were greeted by three men in pink leotards doing what looked like kung foo and being filmed by a camera crew, australians are pretty odd!
By this point we had been walking about an hour and we fancied a drink so we headed to the juice bar and had one banana and one strawberry smoothie, yum... best so far!!
We then decided to go for a swim, at this point it was really hot, but unfortunatley the sea was not and it took us about 15 minutes to build up the courage to actually get in the water, again a few weird glares from locals as ashley screamed when he got hit by cold water! We eventually got in the water and the waves seemed pretty big. We decided to name the waves, we called the big ones that didnt break 'floaters' and the ones that broke and shoved u underwater 'sinkers' we found it pretty amusing, and the big sinkers were pretty fun! So after this, we were pretty hungry and headed to a beachside cafe and had some dinner, we then headed back on the bus... a perfect day! The walk was so good today, the views were just awesome, we're so lucky to be here, couldn't help thinking that alfi and sooty, sally and sam would have loved this walk and would have loved playing in the sea at the different beaches and bays!! xx

We started to realise whilst walking down to the beach that no-one was actually in the water without wet-suits, which was a bad
sign because we weren't, and no-one was actually swimming or sunbathing; just surfers, i think this may be due to the weather looking back because yesterday morning did remind us of being back in England. Nevertheless we carried on, put down our towels and got ready to go swimming. Ashley was first, he ran and dived into the water which i was meant to film, but it took me five minutes of filming to realise that the cap was still on... oops! Ashley was mad because apparantly the water was freezing not the bath water temperatures we'd hoped for. So, thinking ashley was just being a wimp i decided to try it, yer, he wasnt joking, i think blackpool beach would have been warmer, it actually took your breath away, and the waves were that big that they dragged you head first back onto the sand, fun for about a minute! So, we didnt get our relaxing morning swim we were hoping for. We headed back onto the sand and re-clothed and decided to do a spot of people watching, which i found amusing, watching people run into the sea and run back out pink and shivering! We headed home after this, after visiting the supermarket to see if the yoghurts had improved... the answer was no.
When we got home, ashley rang a woman about a job that he had seen and she told us to come for an 'initial appointment' at 11:30am, so we rushed to get ready and look... 'business like'.
We found the place and filled in a load of forms and was told to come back at 1pm for an observational session. We didnt know what the job entailed still but they told us that we could travel on day trips with other travllers, that it would be fun and that the money was good, so we went away pretty hopeful.
After an hour of shopping and dinner at an italian takeaway (so good!) we went back to the office ready for theafternoon. We were paired up with our salesman who we were meant to be observing a french guy called james who was pretty cool, unfortunately however the job wasn't,it was door to door selling which is bad enough and it was also for a charity so the thought of getting paid for charity work kind of finished us off for the day. We soon made our excuses and left. Got back to the apartment about 5pm were asleep for six so god only knows how we're gonna manage a night out tomorrow. x

Well after this tasty treat we headed up again to the shopping mall at the 'top of the hill', we took a different route today and yet still its not just at the 'top of the hill'. Well... we were going to hand out CV's and photocopy ashleys but that didnt work out, so i handed mine out. After this we headed into Sydney, we got our tickets for the train and headed underground to the station, there was a train there so we ran onto it, we sat down and the train started to move, at this point we realised we didnt actually look where the train was going and so we spent the next ten minutes discreetly panicking about where the hell we were going. It turned out that we were on the right one, but not knowing where we were ment to get off we just followed the crowd.. it worked! We got off at Town Hall station, walked up the steps and just stopped, we were surrounded on all sides by the biggest skyscrapers i have ever seen, so weird, we felt so small compared to them.

So, we were in Sydney, and well after this we didnt have a plan. We had to go to the bank, and a medicare office, ashley assured me 'we'll probably just pass the bank and run into a medicare office' at this point i wasnt too sure, being about twenty times the size of manchester and we cant even find our way around that! So, we set off, i dont know what too but we must have walked around the same block about 3 times. In Sydney, the amount of people is just unbelievable, you kind of get swept along with the crowd and if you want to go the opposite way, well... tough!
We decided that the best way to see the city would be on a monorail, but it wasnt, for a brief second we forgot about blending in and rushed for our cameras to capture the sights of sydney, after about a minute we realised that no good pictures were coming from this, as we were seeing the sights of backs of shops, pretty poor. Well, we finally got off the monorail at the city centre and decided it was about time to find the bank, which apparantly is not even a bank, but level 2 in a skyscraper where travellers are packed into a room trying to find jobs and open bank accounts.

By the time we had sorted the bank account out we were very hungry and pretty cranky, so we went for some food and then come to the conclusion that we should head out of the city centre and go see the harbour. This was the best idea we'd had all day. The harbour is completely different to the city centre, so calm, the views are just amazing! At the harbour it was quiet, people were lying on the grass, eating ice cream, watching the huge boats come in and out. We just stood for ages watching the boats and looking at the opera house and the bridge, and they actually look ten times better in real life. Again we ditched the whole blending in with the locals and whipped out the cameras, at which ashley tried for about half an hour to get a picture of both of us with the bridge and opera house in, finally, thank god, he did! After this we were pretty tired so we decided we'd head home, and in half an hour in rush hour traffic we were home, so good, we're so close to the centre!!

When we got home, our phone was ringing, a lady asked for me, and well, offered me a trial at a sandwich shop on monday and said that if i liked it that she'd put me on the rota from wednesday, what can i say, my talent shines on, and i can impress australia with my wealth of sandwich making abilities. Great!
Well... i take it back, by half six we were in bed asleep, it seems we still haven't conquered jet lag! hmmmm xx

So today the plan was to go into Sydney. We woke up at 4:30am, so it was safe to say that we were jet-lagged.
Today, we did our 'BIG SHOP', and were surprised when it came to about £40, so we went back and got some more!! This time splashing out on 'luxuries such as chocolate and spaghetti hoops with extra cheese (more about them tomorro!)

We had to go and see the lady in reception to give her the bond and sort our rent out, and she was really nice. She told us about a shopping centre at Bondi Junction which she told us was at the 'top of the hill', to our surprise, well... it wasn't, and the hill was big, very big and after about an hour we reached the top and found the shopping centre and carrying on with the theme that also was very big. Ashleys jaw was on the floor when we saw the shopping centre, as it was about the size of the trafford centre but not two levels but six!! We had a wander around the centre and soon found loads of notices for jobs in the shops, which to us seemed promising. A lot of wandering later we were hungry so we went to the bottem level where we found PIE FACE!! As the name suggests this was a shop which sold Pies which had faces on them, a different face for every filling, seeing is believing! ...and trust me there was a lot of fillings, so a lot of weird faces! So it was fair to say that for Ashley there was now a replacement for greggs which he became attached to in the last week in Burnley, but where they have sausage and bean fillings PIE FACE has ricotta and sun-dried tomatoes :0 <--- that being the face on the pie.

After PIE FACE, we went to the market and bought some fruit then not fancying walking we got on a bus home. By this time (1pm) we were tired, so we thought we'd have an hours nap, we woke up at 7pm, so the jet-lag was not going great. We had to force ourselves to get up and stay awake until 12:30am, and hopefully we should be on aussie time tomorro!

So... We're Here!!! tag:travellerspoint.com,2006-10-03:/blog/?domain=hannah1987&thisblog_entryid=5&entryid=26253 2006-10-03T23:35:32Z 2006-10-03T23:35:32Z After Italian meals on both Saturday and Sunday night, we woke up at half four on monday morning stinking of garlic but ready for the flight. We checked in at terminal 3 and then headed to the cafe to have a drink with Ashleys Grandma and Grandad and Hannahs Mum and Dad, whilst watching the planes take off and listening to air traffic control. After Italian meals on both Saturday and Sunday night, we woke up at half four on monday morning stinking of garlic but ready for the flight. We checked in at terminal 3 and then headed to the cafe to have a drink with Ashleys Grandma and Grandad and Hannahs Mum and Dad, whilst watching the planes take off and listening to air traffic control. We headed for our flight which was scheduled for 8:20am. There was a few teary goodbyes but we set off and within an hour was landing at Heathrow.
At this point we were more than starving so est est est was our first port of call, Hannah had Scrambled egg and smoked salmon on toast and Ashley had " a buffalo mozzerello, chirizo sausage, sun-ripened tomato and spinach panini' which he claims was the 'best thing ever'. After a wee spot of shopping and desperatley trying to get rid of English coins we headed for the plane and boarded for 12:15pm. The thought of twelve hours on this plane sucked, BUT... we were more than amused by the multimedia entertainment system for around half an hour, but even ashley was bored of this pretty soon, this is around 5 films later. The food was good and Hannah got her veggie meals about half an hour before everyone else... which was GOOD! We ended up sat next to a lady who had been delayed around 24 hours, which made us feel better, as we were moaning but she was not. We got talking to her and she thought she could get us some jobs, so we exchanged numbers and she promised to ring.
We were so relieved when we touched down at singapore but there was not much to do, since we didnt have any money. We made full use of the 'relaxation area' basically a bed, and the foot massager until the harsh realisation dawned upon us that this machine was full of singapore sams sweaty feet and after this we soon left!
Seven hours later, and some much needed sleep there was the call from the captain telling us we were ready for descent. We arrived in sydney at around 6:55pm and it was dark. The view was amazing, the whole city lit up and views of the harbour bridge and the opera house were stunning, and at this point we were very excited, to which the delayed lady (lilliana) responded 'i've seen it all before', and to celebrate she kindly gave us a bottle of Champagne to celebrate our stay!
After Customs, Hannah being searched and asked 'do you have the shoes on you that you wear on the farm', getting our visa, picking up our luggage and finally getting a taxi we arrived at our apartments... which were nice! We dumped our bags and headed towards the beach, but for food, and desperate to sample local cuisine and culture we found ourselves sat in mcdonalds eating big macs and fillet o' fish listening to Richard Ashcroft! We headed home after this, unpacked and fell asleep for around 10:30pm. We were excited for our day tomorro in sydney!!!

So excited, and looking forward to the next two weeks, my mum and dad and brother have gone on holiday and come back the day before we leave, so not much time with them, also got a lot of meals coming up, with Ashleys mum and Dad, Ashleys Nan and Grandad and My Mum and Dad, Cant wait!

Anyhow, the next time i write i should be livin' it up in Australia!!! Gonna miss lots and lots of people, but hope people will keep in touch!

So, its the 2nd August and exactly two months before we depart from the UK. So far, we've booked the flights, our apartment in Sydney and our Apartment in Cairns.

Our Plan is to stay in Australia for around 11 months, allowing us time to sort out university when we get home. We plan to stay in Sydney for three months, allowing us to spend Christmas on the Beach in Bondi and New Years Eve watching the fireworks on Sydney Harbour.

Next we plan to fly to Cairns where we've booked an apartment close to the beach. We want to do loads of watersports whilst in Cairns, diving in the great barrier reef, swimming with wild dolphins, and learning to surf whilst trying our best to avoid the numerous deadly creatures!

We haven't completely decided the next part of our journey, we have booked to fly home from Perth, so we're going to spend at least one month there. On our way Home, we're visiting Hong Kong and spending four nights there.

Although its only eight weeks away from us leaving we still have so much to sort out. We still haven't managed to get visas... which is worrying, and haven't booked any travel insurance, due to lack of funds...

But, we're getting there, and with only two months to go, i'm so excited! can't wait!

Our Apartment we have booked in Bondi, Sydney

Our Apartment we have booked in Palm Cove, Cairns
